About Our Community
Our Community creates and disseminates tools, training and technological tools for the Australian not-for-profit sector – it's the place that community groups go for help in fundraising, governance, marketing, finance, advocacy, leadership, risk management and more.
Our Community also provides inspiration, information and services to the 1000-strong army of grantmakers that each year shifts $30 billion dollars in government, philanthropic and corporate funding to effect social and economic change. Its grantmaking software, SmartyGrants, is used by more Australian grantmakers than any other, and is now spreading fast to other parts of the world.
Our Community also works with corporate responsibility and shared value practitioners to help enlightened businesses make more authentic connections with their communities.
We were formed in 2000 with both social and profit motives, but at that time, none of the existing structures seemed to fit. We always wanted to be different, to do business differently. We spent many years trying to explain that we weren't a business in the traditional sense, and not a not-for-profit either. Originally we called ourselves a social enterprise (we still do sometimes) but then the fabulous B Corp movement came along and finally we had a match. We like to say we were a B Corp before B Corps were invented!
The Change We Seek®
Our Community works to build stronger communities through stronger community organisations.
Prior to the formation of Our Community, Australian community groups were much loved but many were under-resourced and highly vulnerable. There was a fear that dysfunction and disorganisation in the areas of fundraising, financial management, marketing and governance put the foundations of this important sector at risk.
Since its formation in 2000, Our Community has worked to create practical tools and disseminate information and training that could be easily understood and immediately implemented by busy volunteers and hard-pressed staff. The organisation also works to bring all parts of this vast $100 billion sector together to achieve a united voice and bring to bear its combined purchasing power.
The organisation brings the same real-world approach to its work with grantmakers and businesses seeking to achieve more productive and authentic community connections.
The products and services developed and disseminated by Our Community are having a real and sustained impact on the fortunes and effectiveness of many thousands of not-for-profit organisations across the country and the grantmakers and businesses who support them and work alongside them. This has had immeasurable flow-on effects for the health of Australian society as a whole.
Our Community leads Australia in providing a model for socially minded businesses. The organisation operates under a cross-subsidisation model, aiming to reach as many organisations at as low a cost as possible. Paid products and services (newsletters, books, training, SmartyGrants subscriptions, jobs listings) subsidise free or reduced-cost ones (the commission-free GiveNow online donations service, free Policy Bank and Board Matching Service, etc.) that may otherwise be unaffordable to the organisations that are doing the most to build stronger communities.

B Impact Report
The Environment section of the Assessment evaluates a company's environmental performance through its facilities; materials, resource, and energy use; and emissions. Where applicable, it also considers a company's transportation/distribution channels and environmental impact of its supply chain. This section also measures whether a company's products or services are designed to solve an environmental issue, including products that aid in the provision of renewable energy, conserve resources, reduce waste, promote land/wildlife conservation, prevent toxic/hazardous substance or pollution, or educate, measure, or consult to solve environmental problems.
The Worker section of the survey assesses the company's relationship with its workforce. This section measures how the company treats its workers through compensation, benefits, training, and ownership opportunities provided to workers. It also focuses on the overall work environment within the company through management/worker communication, job flexibility and corporate culture, and worker health and safety practices.
The Customers section of the Assessment measures the impact a company has on its customers. The section focuses on whether a company sells products or services that promote public benefit, and if those products/services are targeted towards serving underserved populations. Questions in this section will measure whether a company's product or service is designed to solve a social or environmental issue (e.g. improves health, preserves environment or creates economic opportunity to individuals or communities, promotes the arts/sciences, or increases the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises).
The Community section of the survey assesses a company's impact on its community. The Community section evaluates a company's supplier relations, diversity, and involvement in the local community. The section also measures the company's practices and policies around community service and charitable giving. In addition, this section includes if a company's product or service is designed to solve a social issue, including access to basic services, health, education, economic opportunity, arts, and increasing the flow of capital to purpose-driven enterprises.
The Governance section of the Assessment evaluates a company's accountability and transparency. The section focuses on the company's mission, stakeholder engagement, and overall transparency of the company's practices and policies.
