Tell us a bit about what We Are Explorers does.
We Are Explorers is an Australian media company spreading the power and excitement of adventure travel, nature and environmentalism to over a million people in Australia and New Zealand every month. We collaborate with the world’s greatest creators to produce content and activations with our brand partners.
What inspired you to become a Certified B Corporation?
We believe that a company’s success should first be measured by the positive impact it has on the world around them. People and the planet should always come before profit. Whether it’s our team members, customers or clients – as business leaders we’re given the opportunity to steer people in a certain direction. In other words, we have a duty to steer our communities towards a future we can feel excited about, one we feel proud to hand to our kids knowing that we did the right thing. The B Corp certification is the clearest way to bring this message to life.
What makes We Are Explorers unique as a business?
We exist to inspire Australians to spend more time outdoors and, in turn, become ambassadors for our natural world. We publish around 10-20 editorial pieces a week on our site to drive awareness for environmental activism and the need for more nature infused lifestyles. We also run initiatives that bring this all to life in incredible ways. Recent projects include crowdfunding $30,000 to buy & protect one hectare of the Daintree Rainforest with Indigenous Elders, and producing an original docu-film about a tetraplegic paraglider called Limitless that’s now touring (and winning) festivals around the world.
Do you have any tips for aspiring B Corps about the certification process?
Everyone should at the very least complete the assessment. It’s revealing, forcing you to put your business in front of a mirror and ponder every single thing you do and why. Regardless of whether you complete the process of not, it creates some powerful conversations with yourself and your team to steer companies in a direction that supports the world around us.
