In 2018, Lottie Dalziel tried to drastically reduce her waste as a New Year’s resolution. She quickly realised how difficult it was — not only to find products that were better for the planet, but also to find trusted, credible information about waste and recycling. Lottie launched Banish: an online marketplace that ships products without bubble wrap, plastic satchels, or sticky tape. The platform also provides educational resources and tips to help Australians reduce their footprint. To celebrate Banish becoming a B Corp, they shared some insights into their certification process.
Tell us a bit about Banish.
Banish was born in a bid to help Australian’s reduce their waste with the right products and even better information. Our aim at Banish is to give Australians all of the tools they need to reduce their waste and ecological footprint.
Why did you want to certify as a B Corp?
We currently have a very strict and stringent application process for brands to become Banish approved but we wanted a third-party to back it up! B Corp has been an aim for Banish since day one so we’re so excited to be certified.
What makes Banish unique as a business? Tell us some of the areas where you have the biggest impact, or some of the little changes you’ve made to make a difference.
Banish is not only one of Australia’s leading sustainable marketplaces but we are also a massive education platform. Our focus is on empowering and inspiring our audience to make sustainable changes small and large. We launched the BRAD program just over 12 months ago which is one of Australia’s largest consumer recycling programs offering the ability for any Australian to recycle everything from beauty products to blister packs and coffee pods.
B Corps want to help transform our economy to one that is inclusive, sustainable, and regenerative. What business practice do you want to see become the norm?
Transparency. It isn’t about being perfect but I would love to see more businesses share with their community where they’re at when it comes to sustainability and how they’re going to improve.
Was there a B Corp that inspired you to certify, or one that you look to for inspiration?
Verdecon, they are an amazing team and helped us massively. It was so inspiring seeing a building company get certified!
Do you have any tips for aspiring B Corps about the certification process?
Make it a priority and get cracking! It really helped a lot of our other business areas too.
