BFTW 2019 Community: Mama Maya

Mama Maya was founded on the philosophy that every woman deserves a clean and safe childbirth; they’ve created a collection of beautiful muslin baby wraps that also contribute to improving maternal health worldwide. Mama Maya is kind to both our makers and the environment – from the GOTS-certified organic cotton used, to their fair trade accredited manufacturer, sustainable printing, reusable muslin bag and recyclable labels, right through to the biodegradable & recyclable packaging they use to post. We speak with founder Robyn Jones to learn more.

1. What makes your company Best For The World?Mama Maya believes every woman deserves a clean and safe childbirth, and we are making an impact through the sales of our beautiful organic muslin baby swaddles. For every swaddle purchased, we fund clean birthing kits to enable women living in remote areas of developing countries to give birth safely. We’ve funded kits for over 8,000 women so far, with big goals to help many more mamas and babies around the world!

2. What makes you stand out from other companies? We’re a for-profit, for-purpose business – we exist to make the lives of mamas around the world better. Whether it’s our commitment to fund birthing kits for mothers in developing countries, or our commitment to ethical production and sustainable, organic fabrics, we’re on a mission to do things better. Becoming a certified B Corporation was an obvious step for us to embed our purpose into the DNA of Mama Maya, and having B Lab, the non-profit organisation supporting the B Corp movement, acknowledge our efforts and awarding Best for the World, means the world!3. How do you plan to celebrate? With a huge thank you to the people who helped make Mama Maya who we are!

4. Part of being “Best for the World” is striving to always use your business as a force for good. What initiatives do you have planned for the coming year to continue to be Best for the World?

We’ll be focusing on more ways to reduce our impact, removing much more plastic from our business. Being a B Corp has us always looking to improve!

5. What advice do you have for other B Corps and purpose-led businesses that want to improve their impact?I always recommend doing (or redoing) the B Impact assessment – it’s free, and enables you to look for opportunities to improve across your business.
