BFTW 2019 in Governance: Australia New Zealand Recycling Platform

First certified in May 2019, Australia and New Zealand Recycling Platform (ANZRP) is a leader in the safe and responsible collection and recycling of e-waste and represents some of the largest and most reputable global electronics brands.

We hear from Ed Scott-Dickens as to what makes them stand out from other companies in their recognition as Best For The World 2019 in Governance.

1. What makes your company Best For The World?

As the largest Co-regulatory Arrangement operating under Australia’s National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme, ANZRP’s mission is focused on product stewardship and promoting recycling. Implicit in our governance structures are social and environmental performance measures, overseen by ethical and transparent formal governance processes that progress this mission. Every day we continue to work towards our mission and aim to improve our positive impact on all stakeholders.

2. What makes you stand out from other companies?

What makes us stand out is our will to go the extra mile to implement processes up and down our supply chain to meet regulatory requirements and the highest standards.

ANZRP is the first waste management company to become B Corp certified in Australia and we’re working closely with our partners to advance the e-waste recycling industry which ultimately benefits the whole community. ANZRP has also been working hard to ensure our culture is inclusive and all employees are engaged in the positive impact the company is delivering.

3. How do you plan to celebrate?

Having B Lab recognise our efforts and awarding us Best for the World is a great honour. Our B Corp journey has been a team effort so we plan to get our team together and take some time to appreciate everyone’s hard work in getting to this point. We will also share the news with our member companies and thank them for supporting us to reach this point.

4. Part of being “Best for the World” is striving to always use your business as a force for good. What initiatives do you have planned for the coming year to continue to be Best for the World?

Achieving B Corp certification was not only great for recognition of our strengths, but helped us identify areas we could improve on. We’ve set up a Workplace Wellbeing Working Group to improve the wellbeing and happiness of our staff with a number of initiatives to be implemented over the next year. We’re also working on a number of new product stewardship initiatives that will help the community to responsibly recycle more end-of-life products.

5. What advice do you have for other B Corps and purpose-led businesses that want to improve their impact?

The B Impact Assessment is a valuable tool. It enables you to identify areas in which the organisation is performing well and areas where improvements can be made so you can focus on where you can best make your impact. Don’t get too focused on the score and try and make improvements everywhere. Instead focus on a few company-wide initiatives that make sense for you and your stakeholders and the points will look after themselves!
