The Certification Journey: Tangible take-aways from three new B Corps

The road to B Corp Certification isn’t easy, and although each travels using the same B Impact Assessment tool, every B Corp’s journey looks a little different. That’s to be expected, with over 10,500 B Corps in the mix globally, ranging in size, location, age, industry and complexity.

So, no, it’s no walk in the park — that’s common knowledge. But it shouldn’t be a lonely trek. In fact, as far as sharing valuable stories, practical lessons, and certification experiences, our community is known to be an open book.

In this spirit, today we celebrate three new local B Corps who certified over spring/summer — Losee Consulting, Crescent Nest, Grasshopper Gardens. Below, we learn more about their work and what their approach to certification looked like in practice.

How Losee Consulting supports more sustainable infrastructure (while walking the walk themselves)

Based in the sunshine state, Losee Consulting looks at major infrastructure projects and built environment planning through a sustainability lens. “Last year, our consulting services supported 25 projects across infrastructure, energy, transport, water, and waste, enabling measurable impact,” the team explains, “from reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing circular economy outcomes to improving community infrastructure and public services.”

A dive into this B Corp’s portfolio offers insight into the wide variety of projects it’s had a hand in — think motorway upgrades, hospital redevelopment, carbon reduction planning and the like. “By guiding clients to adopt sustainable practices, innovative business models, and verified impact strategies, we create tangible, lasting positive change—showing how our business serves as a force for good.”

Walking the walk, Losee Consulting has also recently strengthened internal sustainability and governance practices, enhanced HR systems, and continued its active participation in Clean Up Australia Day and sustainability education events.

The B Corp Certification process: Practical lessons from Losee Consulting

Losee Consulting shares that its office manager was the one at the helm of its B Impact Assessment (a role we often entitle the ‘beekeeper’). They were supported by one of the business’ sustainability consultants and company director as needed.

“Complete the assessment first without over-focusing on evidence, then review your results, organise documents, and assign improvements. Staying organised and involving your team early makes the journey far easier.”

“Once we committed to certification,” Losee shares, “we organised documentation in a clear folder system, exported the assessment to Excel to track gaps, and kept the whole team updated through weekly meetings.”

Crescent Nest on why durability and repairability should be the norm for everyday products

Offering folks a more sustainable approach to everyday self-care, Crescent Nest’s signature product is a modular sonic toothbrush that’s as thoughtfully designed as it is aesthetically pleasing.

When it’s time to upgrade, users keep the handle and replace only the brush head. The B Corp, based in Aotearoa New Zealand, explains that the modular system “reduces single-use plastic vs typical all-in-one plastic alternatives,” and that brush head bodies are made with FSC-certified bamboo for “durability and waste prevention”.

“Designing things to last and giving customers a clear pathway to repair or refurbish, cuts waste at the source, reduces demand for virgin materials, and builds trust.”

In the spirit of pursuing circularity, Crescent Nest has also built into its operations a refurbishment pathway, where customers can return used/end-of-life handles to be refurbished and put back into use via the brand’s ‘Renewed’ channel.

“I’d love to see durability + repairability become the norm for everyday consumer products,” shares Crescent Nest founder Crystal Zhang. “Because the cheapest, cleanest product is the one you don’t have to replace. Designing things to last and giving customers a clear pathway to repair or refurbish, cuts waste at the source, reduces demand for virgin materials, and builds trust. It also forces brands to take responsibility for the full lifecycle of what they sell, not just the moment it leaves the warehouse.”

Navigating B Corp Certification: What worked for Crescent Nest

Pulling back the curtain on its Certification experience, Crescent Nest shares that the team established early on what they referred to as an ‘evidence library’. “One folder structure,” they describe, “with named files for every claim (policies, supplier docs, invoices, screenshots, certificates, RMA/refurb records), so nothing was hunted down twice.”

“Start with what you can prove,” Crescent Nest adds, offering a valuable nugget of wisdom to aspiring B Corps. “If you can’t evidence it, don’t claim it — yet. Build the measurement system first, then upgrade the claim.”

Grasshopper Gardens Ltd on the art of deeply intentional green spaces

Grasshopper Gardens is a family-owned garden design and landscaping business. This passionate group of experienced green thumbs work Aotearoa New Zealand-wide to create commercial and residential garden spaces to enhance wellbeing, support biodiversity and foster meaningful connection with nature.

For this B Corp, social and environmental performance are integral factors in decision-making, guiding how the team plans, sources materials, and delivers services. “Over time, we continue to refine our practices to ensure our growth remains sustainable, ethical, and aligned with our purpose: to make a lasting, positive difference to the people and places we care for.”

“Through thoughtful plant selection, we prioritise hardy, climate-appropriate species that require less water, fertiliser, and chemical intervention, while also providing habitat and food sources for pollinators and local wildlife,” explains the Grasshopper Gardens team. The company also minimises green waste through composting, mulching, and responsible disposal practices — “returning organic matter back into the soil wherever possible.”

“We help our clients enjoy healthy, thriving green spaces while reducing long-term environmental impact.”

Grasshopper Gardens’ approach to keeping sustainability top-of-mind internally

Reflecting on the road to certification, Grasshopper Gardens explains that the team made a habit of making sustainability item #1 on the agenda during internal meetings. “This bought it into the forefront of everyone’s minds and really embedded it into our values.”

Your B Corp community is here to help

These are just three voices from our vast global community, yet their certification journeys reflect the same themes we hear time and again. The key takeaways? A smoother process often comes down to appointing a dedicated project lead with strong support, securing early team buy-in, embedding sustainability into everyday decision-making, and keeping your documentation organised from the outset. And while these insights are a great starting point, they only scratch the surface. There’s plenty more to learn by connecting with others in the B Corp community — whether by attending a B Local gathering or exploring the directory to connect with B Corps near you.
